Mountain Equipment Coop

Toronto, Ontario

65 sq ft lightweight XF301, 10lbs per sq foot, no irrigation

In 2005, MEC chose to install a second smaller green roof using the XF301 pre-grown vegetation mat as a demonstration plot to see how it would perform and compare it to the adjacent semi-intensive green roof by a different company green roof.  The XF301 is a lightweight extensive system with sedum plants that can withstand harsh conditions, such as on a rooftop.

Per square foot, the extensive system is more economical to buy and install than its neighbouring companion.  It also requires less maintenance. Annual maintenance of the XF301 is 50 per cent less per square foot than MEC's semi-intensive (source: Queen’s University Feasibility Study for a Green Roof Application, April 2006).

As the XF301 plot has no irrigation, there was no initial cost of an irrigation system and plants have never been replaced.
