Origins
The origins of the Xero Flor® Green Roof Systems started in Germany approximately 40 years ago, when the company was involved with lawn turf cultivation. Demand to provide reinforced turf for embankments and slopes led to the eventual development of reinforced vegetation systems for greening roofs.
Concern for the environment led to many German towns and cities to require that new flat-roofed commercial and industrial buildings have an extensive green roof installed. The need for low weight, low cost and low maintenance systems naturally guided us towards plants that were better suited to the roof top environment - more resistant to cold, heat, drought and could exist both in shade and bright sunshine. Using plant species such as sedums and other low growing alpines and succulents, these proved to be ideal for creating pre-cultivated vegetation blankets.
