Retrofit of a tar and gravel leaky roof with a modified bitumen and a lightweight Xero Flor extensive green roof. Retrofit required a lightweight, extensive system with little maintenance.
The new green roof offers a safe and comfortable recreational space for participants. Environmental education has been incorporated into all of the programs. Additionally, the green roof is decreasing the building's air conditioning needs, increasing the roof lifespan, reducing stormater runoff and resulting water pollution.
"The Drum Artz building had a lot of space that we could use on the roof. We’re in an urban area with very little access to gardens and park. With a green roof we could grow what we eat and nurture plants and watch them grow. Our green roof is a great educational tool. Our participants learn that you need to take care of the environment because it will take care of you. The social and educational benefits of the green roof for Drum Artz are many, as are the environmental and ecological benefits for the city making it a win-win for all."
